Gilroy Veterans Memorial Hall
Building Improvement Campaign

South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District
Since 1951, the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District has proudly served the community by providing the Gilroy Veterans Memorial Hall as a welcoming place for veterans to meet, connect, and socialize.
Although the 6,350-square-foot Hall was built to last and has been well maintained, ongoing renovations and upgrades are essential to ensure it continues serving the community for generations to come. In April 2018, the District launched a Capital Improvement Campaign to raise funds for these vital building improvements.
The District’s Board of Directors remains deeply committed to keeping the Hall a vibrant social hub for veterans and the broader community.
-
A $223,000 bathroom remodel and electrical upgrade were completed in June 2021.
-
A complete kitchen remodel, totaling $474,000, was finished in October 2025.
-
Smaller projects — including front door upgrades, window replacements, and a new security system — were completed in 2019 and early 2020.
Today, the Hall features a 3,333-square-foot meeting hall, a full-service bar, and a modernized kitchen with outdoor barbecue pits. Notably, solar panels were installed over a decade ago, well before green energy became mainstream.
The Hall proudly serves as home to American Legion Post 217, John A. Berri Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6309, and their respective Auxiliaries. The District also hosts Veterans resource fairs and other community-focused events. Additionally, local nonprofits and residents regularly rent the Hall for meetings, memorials, celebrations, and other gatherings — making it a well-used and much-loved community space.
Looking ahead, there is strong potential to expand community use of the Hall. The City of Gilroy’s Five-Year Consolidated Plan and Action Plan identifies a clear community need for additional senior centers and recreation facilities — needs the Hall is well positioned to help meet.

As a Special District, the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District (SSCVMD) is funded through a combination of local tax dollars and facility rentals.
Each year, the District receives less than $190,000 in property tax revenue and generates about $55,000 from rentals. Unfortunately, after covering annual operating expenses — including maintenance, utilities, insurance, and staffing — there are no remaining funds for major repairs or facility improvements.
The newly renovated commercial kitchen will help create an additional source of revenue through increased rentals, but ongoing fundraising remains essential, especially as the Hall’s roof nears the end of its lifespan.
Your support helps us preserve and improve this historic community landmark for future generations.
