Ray Sanchez served his country from 1958 to 1964 in in the United States Army. He completed basic and advanced training at Fort Ord and served temporary duty at Fort Lewis in Washington. Ray’s permanent station was with the 1st Battlegroup 23rd Infantry, Charlie Company in Fort Richardson, Alaska. Today he is a member of the American Legion Post 217.
In civilian life, Ray worked as a barber/hairstylist for 57 years, including operating his own salon “Hair We Are” in San Martin for 47 years. He recently retired, but not before he was inducted into the California Cosmetology Association Hall of Fame in 2013. During his professional career Ray always strived to raise the quality of the industry by organizing countless community fundraisers through cosmetology and coordinating educational opportunities through technology, competitions and scholarships. He was also a frequent contributing author to industry publications and producer and director of video productions. Ray served on the California Cosmetology Association Board of Directors as secretary and the Santa Clara Valley Cosmetology Association as president, nine times.
Ray’s community service didn’t end with a cut and style, he also gives back to the community by serving on advisory committees for the Gilroy Memorial Day Parade, the San Martin Downtown Revitalization, and the Gavilan College Cosmetology Department. He has tirelessly volunteered for the Gilroy Garlic Festival and served on the San Martin Lions Club and South Valley Symphony boards of directors. He has served on the South Santa Clara Valley Memorial District board since 2005.
